Visiting Florence Cathedral means discovering one of the most fabulous artistic spaces in the world, but it requires some prior information.

There are several types of tickets to enter the Florence Duomo, whether you buy them at the ticket office or through Helloticket.

The Duomo is divided into several parts: the cathedral itself, the Baptistery, Giotto's Bell Tower, Brunelleschi's dome and the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. Below are the different combinations available for visiting one or more of these areas:

  • Free admission: you will only be able to enter the nave of the cathedral, but be prepared to queue for a long time and not be able to move around too much in the area that is open to visitors. No payment or prior booking is required, and you can visit every day except Sundays and religious holidays.
  • Full admission - from AED 236: this can be purchased in person at the ticket office or on the official website of the Florence Duomo, as well as on the Hellotickets website.
  • Cathedral + Giotto's Bell Tower + Opera Museum - from AED 172: you can purchase this ticket through Hellotickets and it is also queue-free.
  • Cathedral + Giotto's Bell Tower + Opera Museum - from 172: you can purchase this ticket through Hellotickets and it is also skip-the-line.
  • Cathedral + Museum + Baptistery: tickets can only be purchased in person at the ticket office or on the official website of the Florence Duomo.

Tickets with guided tour

  • Full ticket + guide - from AED 640: you can also purchase this in person and online (but it is not always available in Spanish). It is also available on the Hellotickets website, which allows you to skip the queue.
  • Cathedral + guide + dome - from AED 386: you can purchase this through Hellotickets and it is also queue-free.

Furthermore, all tickets purchased in advance are skip-the-line tickets, which will save you a considerable amount of time.

One option for visiting the Duomo is to purchase tickets directly at the ticket office or online on the complex's website. In the first case, keep in mind that this may not be a good idea, as the queues can be over an hour long and tickets are subject to availability. If, despite this, you choose this option, you will have to arrive very early at the official ticket office in Piazza del Duomo, 14/A.

If you prefer to buy them online, you will find several options depending on the parts of the complex you want to visit. The recent change in the format of the tickets may make it difficult to purchase them. Please note that you will have to indicate the date and time of your visit, although you then have another 3 days to complete it.

  • Ghiberti Pass: includes the Museum, the Baptistery and the remains of Santa Reparata. The price is €15.
  • Giotto Pass: you can visit all the monuments except the dome. It costs around £18.
  • Brunelleschi Pass: this is the most comprehensive pass, as it allows entry to all the monuments in the complex. Remember that to go up to the dome, you will have to specify the specific time slot in which you want to do so. The price is around €30.

The Duomo also offers visitors the option of guided tours, although these are not always available in English. Prices in this case also depend on the parts of the complex you wish to visit.

  • Guided tour of the Cathedral (English or Italian): admission costs around €13.
  • Guided tour of the Baptistery and Museum (Italian or English): around €25.

You can enter the cathedral without queuing and climb Brunelleschi's fabulous dome with an expert guide who will explain everything you are seeing in detail from €60 with Helloticket.

With this offer, you will avoid those queues, saving time and enjoying greater comfort. Another advantage is the presence of an art guide who will tell you everything you need to know about what you are seeing, such as Vasari's wonderful frescoes, to give just one example.

The climb to the dome included with this ticket is, in my opinion, a must for anyone visiting Florence. Apart from its architectural value, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city.

What do these types of tickets usually include?

  • Skip-the-line entry to the cathedral
  • Expert guide
  • Entrance to Brunelleschi's dome
  • Headphones

Why buy this ticket?

The best thing about choosing this ticket is the convenience of being able to enter without waiting in line. This convenience is even greater when it comes to going up to the dome, as there are usually very long waits, especially if you are travelling to Florence in August or other summer, spring and early autumn months.

Another great aspect to consider when travelling is having an expert guide. Their explanations can often make all the difference when it comes to enjoying and learning from the visit.

The most comprehensive option for visiting all the attractions of the Duomo costs around €91. This price includes a visit to the cathedral, the Baptistery, the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Giotto's Bell Tower and Brunelleschi's dome. As if that weren't enough, you will be accompanied by an expert guide who will explain the tour.

The advantages of this combined ticket begin even before you enter the cathedral, as you will have the opportunity to walk around Piazza del Duomo and listen to a series of explanations that will help you understand the history of the residential complex it houses.

Only the climb up the dome, with its 463 steps, and Giotto's bell tower are done without a guide, so you can enjoy the views from the dome at your own pace.

When booking your climb to the dome, it is important to note the time of your climb, as crowds mean that advance booking is essential. For this reason, if you have booked at the last minute, we cannot guarantee your climb.

What do these types of tickets usually include?

  • An expert guide to provide you with information about what you are seeing.
  • Entrance to the Baptistery: this is a Romanesque building constructed between the 11th and 12th centuries. The highlights are the bronze doors on the outside and the mosaics inside.
  • Entrance to the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo: this museum contains original sketches of the construction of the Duomo, as well as original sculptures of the replicas that can be seen inside the cathedral.
  • Tour of the Cathedral.
  • Entrance to the Dome: designed by Brunelleschi, this construction is impressive for its beauty and the technical difficulty it represented at the time. Inside, the Mannerist-style frescoes are by Vasari.
  • Giotto's Bell Tower was built in Gothic style between 1298 and 1359. It is named after Giotto, who was responsible for covering it with marble.

Why buy this ticket?

The combined ticket is the perfect option to ensure you don't miss any of the important parts of the Duomo complex. With a guide, you will gain a much clearer understanding of the history of this area, as well as its artistic value.

If you prefer not to go with a large group, you can take a private tour from €197. Although the price is obviously higher, the advantages of spending three and a half hours discovering the secrets of all the monuments that make up the Duomo complex are well worth it.

With this option, which guarantees you won't have to wait in any queues, you'll start by discovering all the secrets of the statues that decorate the cathedral's façade thanks to your guide's explanations.

Then, once inside, you will explore every corner, including the interesting Crypt of Santa Reparata, the remains of an ancient church that predates the cathedral, where everyone from popes to artists such as Brunelleschi are buried.

Of course, you will also visit the Baptistery, the Dome and the Bell Tower. Finally, you can enter the museum to see the works of art on display there.

What do these types of tickets usually include?

  • Tickets with skip-the-line reservations
  • Private tour guide expert in art history
  • Entrance to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore
  • Entrance to the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo
  • Entrance to the Baptistery of San Giovanni
  • Entrance to Brunelleschi's Dome
  • Entrance to Giotto's Bell Tower

Why buy this ticket?

If you're looking for a more direct, private and complete experience, this is the option for you. The tour is perfect for those who not only want to see the art located in this complex, but also want to fully understand it.

Not having to queue, on the other hand, will save you a lot of time that you can spend seeing some of the city's other wonders.

Are there any combined tickets for the Duomo and other monuments?

Combined tickets for several monuments are not only more convenient, but also save you money. In this case, in addition to the Duomo, you can visit the Accademia Gallery, including Michelangelo's David.

All this for €93 in groups of no more than 12 people and without having to queue to enter the monuments.

With your expert guide, you can tour the nave of the cathedral and climb Brunelleschi's Dome. However, the rest of the Duomo (Giotto's bell tower, the Baptistery and the square) will be explained to you from the outside.

Why buy this ticket?

This combined ticket has several advantages, starting with the smaller size of the group. This means that the guide's explanations will be more personalised and the visits will be more comfortable.

Furthermore, being able to see two of Florence's major attractions with a single booking and without queuing is a great time saver, allowing you to spend more time exploring the city's streets.

Currently, the Firenze Card tourist card no longer includes Florence's Duomo, although it does include many other museums in the city. So you can no longer take advantage of its discounts to visit the monument.

Is it possible to visit the Duomo for free?

In principle, only the Cathedral of Santa Maria dei Fiori can be visited for free. The rest of the monuments that make up the complex require the purchase of a ticket in advance.

The only exceptions to this rule are:

  • Children under 7
  • People with disabilities (with appropriate documentation and subject to verification) and their carers.

Are there reduced rates for visiting the Duomo?

The only people who can take advantage of a reduced price to enter the Duomo are children between the ages of 7 and 14 with:

  • The Brunelleschi Pass, which costs around €12.
  • The Giotto Pass, which costs €7.
  • And the Ghiberti Pass, which costs around €5 for them.

For people with vertigo it might not be the best plan to climb the bell tower, but otherwise it's great.
