Step by Step
You’ll enjoy a guided tour of the Catacombs of Paris, the city’s most famous cemeteries. A local guide will accompany you on a roughly 2-hour tour through some of the 322 km of tunnels lying 20 metres beneath the centre of the capital. Throughout the tour, you’ll be part of a small group of no more than 15 people, so the guide will be able to offer you a more personalised experience, and you’ll be free to ask any questions you like. What’s more, you’ll gain direct access to the Catacombs, without having to queue.
These tunnels beneath the city of Paris were, during the Roman era, limestone quarries, hence their labyrinthine layout. However, they were converted into a cemetery in the 18th century. Since then, they have served as an ossuary housing the skeletons and skulls of over 6 million Parisians.
Specifically, this tour will grant you access to restricted areas of the Catacombs that are only accessible when accompanied by a guide. This way, you’ll be able to see the remains of great figures such as Rabelais and Robespierre , or the Port Mahon galleries, where you’ll find the secret sculptures of a worker, chiselled over a period of five years before he was crushed in a cave-in. Not to mention Gilbert’s hidden tomb, which also features monuments to the living who once inhabited those tunnels.
