Step by Step

This tour starts in Bangkok and goes to Ayutthaya, the former capital of the Kingdom of Siam before the Burmese invasion. Here you’ll find the Historical Park, an island bordered by a river path that is home to royal palaces and places of worship. The organised tour covers most of the day’s arrangements: a local guide, lunch and admission to the attractions.

Ayutthaya is situated about 80 kilometres north of Bangkok and is easily accessible by the air-conditioned vehicle provided for the tour. The tour usually lasts between 7 and 8 hours and takes in the following monuments:

  • Wat Lokayasutharam – Its main attraction is the gigantic reclining Buddha statue: 42 metres long by 8 metres high.
  • Wat Phra Si Sanphet – The royal family’s private chapel. Not surprisingly, the remains of three important monarchs are interred here. It is recognisable by its three stupas, the quintessential Buddhist monument.
  • Wat Mahathat – A magnificent temple built in the 14th century. It is best known for the Buddha’s head embedded in a banyan tree. It is situated in the northern part of the park.
  • Wat Chaiwatthanaram – Situated on the banks of the river, it was built in the 17th century by King Prasat Thong to celebrate his coronation. It is, without doubt, one of the best-preserved historical complexes

The tour is designed for small groups and runs all year round. Bear in mind that Thailand has a tropical climate. If you’re visiting during the rainy season – between April and October – it’s advisable to bring a raincoat. In the hottest months – April and May – it’s a good idea to bring sun cream and a hat.

Each of the ruins has its own history and significance, and it is worth taking the time to explore them all. The lunch and price were very good.

We visited a great variety of temples, which is one of the main attractions in Thailand. The accompaniment of a guide is indispensable to get to know every detail.
