Step by Step

With these tickets for the MAPFRE Foundation in Madrid, you can discover the artistic programme at its Sala Recoletos, a cultural venue situated on Paseo de Recoletos and dedicated specifically to the visual arts and photography. Its exhibitions take visitors on a journey through different periods and movements from the 19th century to the present day.

Until 10 January 2027, one of the main themes will be Pre-Raphaelite art. ‘Women Artists. Pathways through Pre-Raphaelitism (1850-1914)’ is an exhibition that highlights the role of more than forty female artists associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Through painting, photography, embroidery, enamels and stained glass, visitors can learn about the careers of figures such as Elizabeth Siddal, Julia Margaret Cameron, May Morris and Evelyn De Morgan.

You can also visit *The other face of the avant-garde*, which explores the influence that works created by psychiatric patients had on various avant-garde movements and on the subsequent emergence of Art brut. The exhibition takes its starting point from the work of the psychiatrist and art historian Hans Prinzhorn and prompts reflection on the traditional boundaries of what is considered art.

The programme is rounded off with a retrospective dedicated to Minor White, one of the key figures in 20th-century American photography and co-founder of *Aperture* magazine. Landscapes, portraits, urban photography, photo series, books and other materials offer an insight into his unique way of understanding photography as a poetic and conceptual language.
