Step by Step

Monserrate Palace is one of those places where architecture and nature seem designed to be enjoyed together. Its current appearance dates back to the 19th century and the vision of Francis Cook, who transformed the estate into a residence inspired by Romanticism.

Inside, you’ll find a décor quite unlike that of other palaces in Sintra. Arches, columns, plasterwork and galleries combine Gothic, Oriental and Moorish influences, creating spaces that are very light and full of intricate details.

Among the most striking rooms are the central gallery, the music room and the various salons of the residence. The tour allows you to appreciate both the richness of the ornamentation and the way the building blends into the surrounding landscape.

Outside the palace lies one of Monserrate’s main attractions: its botanical gardens. Throughout the grounds, you’ll find plant species from different regions of the world, landscaped areas with very distinct atmospheres, and footpaths winding through one of Sintra’s greenest landscapes.

This visit is particularly well-suited if you’re looking for a more peaceful outing in Sintra, away from the hustle and bustle of the busiest monuments, with the gardens and the outdoor stroll taking centre stage.

Monserrate is well worth a visit for the gardens, not just for the palace. The whole complex is beautiful.

It was one of the most peaceful spots of our day in Sintra. After visiting the town centre, it was a welcome change.

The music room and the central gallery were my favourite spaces in the palace.

The park involves quite a bit of walking and some areas are on uneven ground. Good footwear helps a great deal.
