Experience Highlights

Step inside one of the most fascinating sites of Imperial Rome with these tickets to the Domus Aurea, the sumptuous residence that Emperor Nero had built following the great fire of AD 64. Beneath the ground, you’ll find rooms, archaeological remains and frescoes that still allow you to imagine the scale of that ancient palace.

The tour includes a virtual reality experience with headsets provided, designed to visually reconstruct what the Domus Aurea might have looked like in its heyday. You’ll see how technology restores volume, colour and context to rooms that are now only partially preserved.

The experience lasts approximately 2 hours and begins in the Via Labicana area. There, you’ll need to meet the staff to exchange your digital voucher for an official ticket before entering the site.

  • Explore Nero’s former imperial residence
  • Admire the frescoes and archaeological remains preserved beneath Rome
  • Travel back in time with a virtual reality reconstruction

Step by Step

The Domus Aurea was one of the most ambitious projects of Nero’s Rome. Conceived following the fire of 64 AD, it covered a vast area and was adorned with marble, frescoes, gardens and spaces designed to reflect the emperor’s power.

Today, much of that complex remains underground, but exploring its rooms offers a glimpse into a very different side of ancient Rome. During the tour , you’ll be able to see decorated rooms, architectural remains and frescoes that have survived the passage of the centuries.

The experience is enhanced by virtual reality, which helps to reconstruct what can no longer be seen physically. Using the headsets provided, you can view 3D representations of the ancient spaces and gain a better understanding of how the palace was organised and decorated during the imperial era.

You’ll also discover how the Domus Aurea came to light again centuries later and how its rediscovery during the Renaissance influenced artists fascinated by those ancient decorations.

The combination of archaeology and technology makes the visit a particularly vivid way of engaging with the history of Rome, moving from the present-day remains to an interpretation of what this spectacular complex might have looked like almost two thousand years ago.

I was struck by the sheer size of the original palace. The reconstruction really helps to put its scale into perspective.

The chill inside was the only thing that caught me a little off guard, although I’d already been warned. The visit was excellent.
