This full-day excursion from Sofia will take you to north-western Bulgaria, travelling through the landscapes of the Balkan Mountains until you reach Belogradchik. During the journey, you’ll travel in an air-conditioned vehicle accompanied by a driver-guide, enjoying a day focused on the country’s nature, geology and history.
The first major stop will be Belogradchik Fortress, a structure whose origins date back to Roman times. From its ramparts, you’ll be able to admire the famous rock formations surrounding the town, shaped over millions of years into forms reminiscent of people, animals and fantastical figures. Entry to the fortress is included, and you’ll have around 40 minutes to explore it.
You will then visit Venetsa Cave, renowned for the abundance and variety of its stalactites, stalagmites and other mineral formations. The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and allows you to discover an illuminated underground landscape that contrasts with the mountains and rock formations outside.
Once the visits are complete, you’ll begin the return journey to Sofia accompanied by your guide. Depending on how the day is organised, the route may include views of the Iskar Gorge and brief stops at viewpoints or establishments along the way, bringing this excursion—which combines some of Bulgaria’s most unique landscapes—to a perfect close.
