Step by Step

The Kuranda Scenic Railway is much more than just a means of transport between Cairns and Kuranda. The route follows a historic line built in the late 19th century to navigate the rugged mountain terrain, and even today retains that air of a grand railway journey.

Along the way, the train winds its way through Barron Gorge, passes through numerous tunnels carved into the rock and crosses bridges and viaducts overlooking the jungle. From the windows, you’ll see the landscape change as you gain altitude, with slopes covered in tropical vegetation and increasingly sweeping views over the valley.

One of the highlights comes as you pass Stoney Creek Falls, where the waterfall plunges almost right next to the tracks. You’ll also enjoy views of Barron Falls – particularly impressive when the flow is at its highest – and various sections of Barron Gorge National Park.

If you choose Heritage Class, you’ll travel in historic carriages with a classic railway atmosphere. You’ll find water dispensers at the end of each carriage and receive a souvenir travel guide to help you follow the route and its main points of interest.

Gold Class is designed for those who want to make the journey in extra comfort. It includes individual lounge-style seats, a host service, a welcome drink, soft drinks, locally sourced snacks and a small gift pack. The host can also help you with any queries about the route and the sights you’ll be seeing.

In terms of booking, you can book a one-way journey from Cairns to Kuranda or a return journey to come back later the same day. Gold Class is limited to specific departure times: 09:30 for the outward journey and 15:30 for the return. If you book a return journey in Heritage Class, the return journey can be at 14:00 or 15:30.

The return journey felt a bit long after such a long day, although it was still lovely.
